Graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Architecture. He has 15 years of experience working in K-12 Education, Multi-family, Retail Commercial, Religious Institutions, Medical and Residential projects of multiple scales.
Prior to opening Calyx, Manuel worked in long established firms in the Houston area where he was fortunate to have learned from the exceptional folks at Jackson & Ryan Architects, Morris Architects (Huitt-Zollars), and Element Architects. His time at these firms were fundamental in shaping his knowledge in how to practice architecture with integrity, attention to detail and understanding client needs.
Manuel’s journey is best described by Robert Frost’s poem, “The road not taken”. Deciding to start Calyx Design Studio during a pandemic was probably not the smartest decision but it has proven to be been the most fruitful endeavour; second to marrying his wife, of course.
Growing up in a blue-collar household in Houston’s Eastside, Manuel learned early on that education was key to a successful future. He attributes his grit and relentless spirit from his upbringing and most importantly his family.
Manuel has a deep appreciation for small businesses and understands their challenges to achieve their goals. He comes from a long line of family entrepreneurs and was especially proud to continue their legacy in serving the community. Manuel continues to pull inspiration of his experiences from having worked alongside his parents in their family buisiness, in his practice today.
In his spare time, he enjoys being outdoors, long-distance running and enjoying his evenings with his wife and daughters.
